Extranjería Cartagena: the comisaría on Menéndez y Pelayo, and where the rest is handled

Extranjería in Cartagena means two places: the Comisaría de Cartagena, C/ Menéndez y Pelayo 6, for the NIE, the EU certificate, the TIE, return authorisations and letters of invitation, and the region’s only Oficina de Extranjería, at Cabezo Cortado in Murcia, for permits. policia.es lists no other foreigners’ unit between the city, La Manga and the Mar Menor. (Extranjería, in Spanish, simply means foreigners’ affairs.)

Comisaría de Cartagena, C/ Menéndez y Pelayo 6

In the Policía Nacional’s directory, this comisaría (police station) lists five procedures for foreigners: NIE certificates and assignment (form EX-15), the régimen comunitario (registration of EU citizens and the green certificate), the issue of the TIE after a fingerprint appointment, return authorisations and letters of invitation. The directory carries three numbers for the address: 968 320 795 in its list of foreigners’ units, 968 320 722 as the switchboard in its general list of stations, and 968 321 255 in its list of offices that take police reports. No opening hours are given anywhere in the directory, so follow the time printed on your booking.

The general list also notes that the building can be used by people with reduced mobility, and that it offers induction loops and video interpretation in sign language.

The one unit listed near the Mar Menor

In the policia.es list for the Región de Murcia, the Cartagena comisaría is the one foreigners’ unit in the Cartagena–Mar Menor area. None is listed in La Unión, Fuente Álamo, Torre-Pacheco, Los Alcázares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar or Mazarrón. The directory does not say which towns each unit serves, so residents of the coast book for the province of Murcia and follow the office named on their confirmation.

The other units of the region

  • Brigada Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras, the provincial brigade, Cabezo Cortado, N-301, Murcia (968 989 600): the longest list, and the only one with students, stay extensions, non-lucrative residences, travel documents and asylum
  • Comisaría de Lorca, at Plaza de la Policía Nacional 1 (968 477 296): what Cartagena lists, plus asylum and refugee applications
  • Comisaría de Molina de Segura, at C/ Canarias 2 (968 386 303): what Cartagena lists
  • Comisaría de Yecla, at C/ Rambla 34 (968 719 078): what Cartagena lists

The Oficina de Extranjería in Murcia

Permits are not a police matter. The region’s only Oficina de Extranjería (immigration office) belongs to the Delegación del Gobierno and stands on the same Cabezo Cortado complex as the brigade, off the N-301 at Espinardo (968 989 600, weekdays, 9:00–14:00). Its page lists arraigo, family reunification, studies, long-term residence, renewals, changes of status, the family card of other Europeans’ relatives (form EX-19) and a separate residence authorisation for relatives of Spanish nationals.

For first applications, the Delegación’s instructions ask residents of the province to request an appointment by email, sending its form and the documents as PDF files; applications can also be filed online on the Mercurio platform with a digital certificate, or through a representative. The same page lists the police procedures, the NIE included, as bookable only by cita previa (appointment booked ahead).

From the coast into the city

No official page explains how to reach C/ Menéndez y Pelayo 6 by public transport, and no stop on the city network is named after the street or the police. What the bus operator’s pages, linked from the Ayuntamiento’s transport page, do show is how the coast reaches the Cartagena bus station, on Avenida Trovero Marín beside the Plaza Puertas de San José.

  • Line 43: La Manga and Cabo de Palos, by Los Belones and Playa Honda, to the bus station
  • Line 44: along La Manga between Veneziola, Puerto Tomás Maestre and Cabo de Palos, where it connects with line 43
  • Line 21: Los Urrutias, Los Nietos, Mar de Cristal, Islas Menores and Playa Honda, by El Algar, to the bus station
  • Line 30: Mazarrón, with some trips by Isla Plana and La Azohía
  • The narrow-gauge Cercanías train from Los Nietos to Cartagena station, on the Plaza Puertas de San José
  • From Los Alcázares, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar: no official timetable we could cite, so we give no line

Which office will be yours?

The booking decides. Choose your trámite (procedure) in the cita previa for Murcia province; the system shows the free dates, and the office is printed on the confirmation. For a NIE, a green certificate, a TIE, a return authorisation or a letter of invitation, Cartagena is among the listed offices. For a student stay, a stay extension or non-lucrative residence, expect the brigade in Murcia. For any permit, the Oficina de Extranjería.

Questions

Extranjería Cartagena: is there an Oficina de Extranjería in the city?

No. The Delegación del Gobierno lists one office for the whole region, in Murcia. The comisaría on Menéndez y Pelayo deals with police procedures only.

Is there a police unit for foreigners in San Javier or Los Alcázares?

policia.es lists none, nor in San Pedro del Pinatar, Torre-Pacheco or Mazarrón. Residents book for the province of Murcia, and their confirmation names the office.

Which phone number is right for the Cartagena comisaría?

policia.es gives three for the same address: 968 320 795 in its list of foreigners’ units, 968 320 722 as the station’s switchboard and 968 321 255 for its reports office. None is presented as a booking line; appointments are made online.

What time does Menéndez y Pelayo open?

None are published. The hour on your booking is the one to keep.
